Goals: what players have to do

Every advancement has at least one goal: the thing a player does to earn it.

Kinds of goals

Click a goal's Change to pick its kind. They're grouped:

  • Items: have items in your inventory, craft, eat or drink, use an item, use it on a block, wear armour, enchant, brew, trim armour, fish.
  • Blocks: place or break blocks, build a beacon.
  • Mobs: kill, be killed by, hurt or be hurt by, interact with, hit with a projectile, tame, breed, leash, summon (golems, the Wither, the dragon), trade with villagers.
  • Exploring: visit a biome, height or dimension, find a structure, ride something, have potion effects, play for a while, sleep in a bed.
  • Commands and map making: a tag, a scoreboard score, or only when your commands say so. See Map making.

The trigger reference lists every kind with all its options.

Structures: the ones BedrockAdvancements' own advancements use (strongholds, fortresses, end cities and so on) work in every edition. The rest, like villages, outposts and abandoned camps, and structures from your own add-ons, are listed under Beta edition only: only the Beta edition detects them, and exporting warns you when a goal uses one.

The goal picker: the popular kinds of goal, then every kind by group, with a search box
Click Change on a goal: search, or pick from the popular ones and the groups.

Ids: items, blocks and mobs

Fields like Item or Mob take Minecraft ids. Start typing and pick from the suggestions; each one shows its icon. You can add several: then any of them counts. You can also use:

  • A tag, like #minecraft:logs, for any log.
  • A mob family, like family:monster, for any monster.
  • Your own add-on's ids, like my_addon:ruby, once you've added it under Your add-ons.

Doing something several times

Goals that happen at a moment (killing, mining, eating, breeding…) have a Times setting: "Kill 25 zombies" is the kill goal with Times set to 25. The tooltip shows progress.

Goals that are true or false at any moment (holding items, standing in a biome) don't have Times. For "have 64 diamonds", use the item goal's Amount.

Several goals

+ Another goal adds more. Then choose what the advancement Needs:

  • all: every goal (Java's "Adventuring Time" style, with a progress counter).
  • any: just one of them.
  • In Advanced mode, needs this many: any N of them, like "visit 17 of these 50 biomes".
A second goal added, and the Needs setting
(1) Add another goal, (2) then choose whether all of them are needed, or any one.

In Advanced mode each goal's checklist text is what the in-game progress list shows. By default it's the green sentence.

Rewards

XP is given when the advancement is done. In Advanced mode, Commands run as the player: give @s diamond 3, effect @s regeneration 10, tag @s add chapter_two, one per line.
